What are magic truffles?

The correct name for “magic truffles” is sclerotia and they belong to the same type of fungus as “magic mushrooms”. The magic mushroom grows above the ground as a fruiting body. The underground part, the mycelium (fungal network), extracts nutrients from the soil and here you see the sclerotia appear as mycelium thickening. In the first place they serve as storage for nutrients, when the fungus can find little nutrition. Under favourable conditions the sclerotia can grow into mushrooms above the ground. The “magic mushroom” and the “magic truffles” are closely related and both contain psilocybin, psicoline and baeocystin/ norbaeocystin, the psychoactive substance psilocybin being the one that interests us most.

Psilocybine

The main ingredient psilocybin in the magic truffles belongs to the tryptamines and is therefore closely related to LSD and DMT. Psilocybin is converted into psilocin in our body and interacts with the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin affects memory, mood, self-confidence, sleep, emotion, sexual activity and appetite. Psilocybin is not addictive although tolerance may occur

The history of magic mushrooms and magic truffles

Psilocibyn in the Magic Mushrooms has been used for at least 10,000 years by indigenous peoples around the world for healing, prayer and visions. The sacred ritual use can be found in 6000 year old rock paintings in Spain, 7000 to 9000 year old cave paintings in Algeria, and portraits, motifs and statues from Central America.

In the 1960s, psilocybin mushrooms were popularized as a recreational drug, after R. G Wasson travelled to Mexico with a photographer to meet the Mazatec curandera (medicine woman) María Sabina. They became the first “Western” men in recorded history, who ate the magic mushrooms. After a publication in a well-known magazine about their experience with the magic mushrooms, the information went viral and the recreational use in Western society increased.

The set and setting

The “set” refers to the mindset and physical condition. It is important to start a psychedelic journey in a healthy mental and physical condition. Here it is also important to have the right intention.
The setting refers to the circumstances and the environment. It is recommended to make a journey in a place where you feel safe, with people you trust.

The trip

Approximately 30 minutes after ingestion, the effects become noticeable. Although no trip is the same, most users experience vivid visual effects and an overwhelming sensation of unity. Time and space take on a new meaning and many describe it as a mystical experience. The effects last four to six hours on average. At the end of the trip you have received wisdom, revelation and insights. These remain with you and are there for you to integrate.

The Bad Trip

When you travel in the right set and setting and with respect, you can’t get a bad trip from a shamanistic point of view. When using magic truffles in a spiritual context there is purification of the soul, emotional liberation, healing, confrontation with your own shadow sides (the ego) and transformation.

If the effects are too intense you could use “the trip stopper”. It contains 2 dextro tablets and 4 valerian capsules. Valerian helps to relax, while dextrose helps to neutralize the effects. For both beginners and advanced users “the trip stopper” can help to minimize the intense effects. Within 20 – 30 minutes the trip becomes less intense and if you know you can stop the trip, you can enjoy your experience more.

Scientific research

The nature of the psychedelic experience is still largely a mystery. However, scientists have discovered that, after consuming psilocybin containing mushrooms/ truffles, different areas of the brain begin to communicate with each other, which normally do not. It could therefore be suggested that this hyper-connectivity of the brain and the creation of new connections are responsible for the sensations of enlightenment and introspection. Science has started several studies into the positive side of psilocybin/psilocin and other hallucinogens in the hope of treating psychological disorders such as depression and PTSD in the future. Interesting results are also being achieved in people with cluster headaches.
